For many self-employed applicants, the first decision is whether they should pursue a Golden Visa category or the UAE Green Residence for freelancers and self-employed individuals.

Green Residence current freelancer criteria: a freelance or self-employment permit, at least a bachelorās degree or specialised diploma (or equivalent), and proof of stable annual income or financial solvency. Current ICP guidance also states that freelance income during each of the previous two years should be at least AED 360,000 or equivalent.

Does a UAE Freelance Licence Qualify You for a Golden Visa?
No, not by itself. A freelance licence or permit can support evidence of legal freelance activity, but Golden Visa eligibility still depends on the conditions of the category you apply under.
For example, a freelance photographer may qualify because of recognised creative achievements and endorsement. A freelance consultant may instead need to qualify through an investor, entrepreneur, exceptional-talent or another applicable route. The licence itself is not the Golden Visa eligibility trigger.
Can Freelancers Use the Skilled Professional Route?
Do not assume that a freelance income of AED 30,000 per month automatically gives you the Skilled Professional Golden Visa. The standard skilled-professional route is built around qualifying UAE employment, professional classification, academic qualification and salary evidence.
If you are genuinely employed in the UAE while also doing permitted freelance work, the skilled-professional route may be assessed on the employment profile. If you are solely self-employed, another Golden Visa categoryāor the Green Residenceāmay be the correct route.

A creator can work as a freelancer and still qualify through a creative or exceptional-talent route. In that case, the qualifying basis is the creator profileānot the freelance arrangement.

Freelance developers, engineers, consultants and other technical professionals should first identify the legal Golden Visa category that matches their evidence.
Technical skill alone does not turn freelance status into a Golden Visa route. A person may instead qualify through a salaried skilled-professional position, scientific or exceptional expertise, entrepreneurship, investment or another applicable category.

There is no single universal freelancer income threshold for all Golden Visa categories. The financial requirement depends on the route.
- Green Residence for freelancers/self-employed: current ICP guidance requires stable income or financial solvency and states freelance income during the previous two years should be at least AED 360,000 per year or equivalent.
- Skilled Professional Golden Visa: the salary test belongs to the qualifying employment route, not to freelance status itself.
- Investor / Entrepreneur / Exceptional Talent: each category uses its own qualifying evidence rather than one generic freelancer salary figure.
